English for K9 Security and Law Enforcement

A CEFR-aligned English programme for handlers, field officers and command staff — B2 for standard field duty, C1 for legal and public information officers. This is language courseware, not dog-training instruction. Created by CIC/NGO Leader James Corden-Lloyd, an accredited English educator, who managed a K9 security company in Jakarta for three years after a tennis-coaching client (a financier) saw his security-industry knowledge and asked him to run it while continuing to teach tennis.

This product teaches operational English only. K9 dog training, detection instruction and handler certification remain the responsibility of the service and its accredited K9 instructors. Officers already hold a degree. The gap is operational English

Across Asian services, English is tested at selection and again at promotion, yet almost no service trains it against the duties officers actually perform. General English courses do not close that gap. This programme starts from the duty — a checkpoint, a search, a detection indication, an affidavit, a press line — and teaches only the English that duty requires, then scores it against a CEFR band.

The result is a documentary record: a completed file shows B2 or C1 attainment in a form a promotion or selection board can read. Courseware and assessment materials only — no subscription, no per-seat renewal, nothing to install.

Why officers, not classrooms, set the standard

Most English courses for uniformed services teach general English and hope it transfers. This programme starts from the duty and works backwards to the language.

  • Every unit begins with a real duty — a checkpoint, a search, a handover, a press line — and teaches only the English that duty needs.
  • B2 is the working standard for field duty: clear, accurate, unambiguous language under time pressure and noise.
  • C1 is the standard for anything written for a court or spoken to the media, where a single vague clause can lose a case.
  • Assessment is CEFR-referenced, so a completed file is evidence for promotion, secondment or international deployment.

A detection dog gives an indication. What the handler says next decides whether the evidence survives court.

  • Task: report an indication in four parts — location, dog behaviour, time, and the officer who witnessed it.
  • Model: 'At 14:12, in the rear luggage compartment, K9 Joshua gave a trained final response — sit and focus. Witnessed by PO2 Reyes.'
  • Avoid: 'the dog smelled drugs'. Say what the dog did, not what the dog knew.
  • Language focus: past simple for actions, precise prepositions of place, passive voice for witnessed facts.
  • Progression: repeat the report as a two-line radio transmission, then as a written entry for the exhibit log.

A public information officer answers three hostile follow-up questions without conceding facts that are not yet established.

  • Task: give a 40-second opening statement, then answer three follow-ups without speculating.
  • Model hedging: 'What we can confirm at this stage is…', 'That forms part of an active investigation.'
  • Trap to avoid: agreeing with a reporter's framing by repeating their words.
  • Language focus: nominalisation, modal hedging, cautious reporting verbs and controlled concession.
  • Assessment: scored on accuracy, hedging control, register and the absence of unconfirmed claims.
